Is this Adult Summer Camp? No, its Sun City

Okay, I’m going to let you in on a little secret: moving to Sun City Palm Desert was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. And no, it’s not God’s waiting room. This is not where you come to wind down your life—it’s where you come to live it, fully, joyfully, and sometimes with a margarita in hand by 2:00 PM. (Yes, happy hour is early around here, and no one’s mad about it.)  And in the last few years, our agents at The Paul Kaplan Group have had the pleasure of introducing numerous clients to this adult nirvana, with many ending up buying here.

If you’ve ever wondered what an adult version of summer camp might look like, let me paint the picture. Picture me whizzing around in my golf cart to meet friends for pickleball (yes, it’s a thing and we’re addicted), passing tai chi sessions happening on the promenade overlooking the pool. There are water aerobics classes that get rowdy in the best way, plus bocce ball, tennis matches, and even fishing in our on-site pond.

And that’s just before lunch.

Sun City Palm Desert is a playground for grown-ups. We’ve got over 80 clubs. Want to get crafty? There’s a full-on pottery studio (clay-covered hands and all), a stained-glass studio that makes you feel like a Renaissance artisan, a quilters’ hideaway, photography lab, and even a painting studio. You could spend your whole week trying something new and still not get through everything. Or—you could just chill in your beautifully landscaped backyard with a book and a lemon tree. Your pace, your call.

Oh, and there are two restaurants inside the community. Plus, an on-site postal center for sending postcards to all your friends still shoveling snow back home with a smug little “wish you were here” message.

Now let’s talk homes. Whoever designed these 40+ floor plans knew what they were doing. While the exteriors may have that classic desert stucco vibe, the inside is where you can really shine. Yes, some homes still have original interiors (bless the swag curtains and pastel florals), but my rule of thumb? It takes about $30,000 to “de-grandma” a home. Paint, floors, and ditching those drapes = instant transformation.

Many homeowners here have gone full HGTV, doing extensive remodels that’ll knock your socks off—especially during our annual home tour hosted by the Sun City Garden Club (yes, that’s a thing, and yes, it’s fabulous). The bones are good: high ceilings, big windows, private yards, and plenty of room to make it your own.

And let’s talk value. Homes start around $400,000. In today’s market, that’s a steal—especially when you consider all the amenities, security, and pristine surroundings. Sun City has one of the lowest HOA fees in the Coachella Valley, yet it delivers big. I once noticed some weeds near a sidewalk… by the next day, poof—gone. They’re on it before you can even file a complaint.

Yes, the HOA is strict. They want your trash cans in on time, and if you're selling, they’ll inspect down to the tiniest detail (I got dinged for a planter stain on my driveway). But honestly? That’s what keeps this place looking like a dream.

So if you're 55+ and thinking about your next chapter, don’t think of retirement as an ending—think of it as the beginning of your adult summer camp life. Come take a look at Sun City Palm Desert. I’d love to show you around. Just don’t be surprised if you leave with a pickleball paddle and a paintbrush in hand.
